Surveys show the public wants legislative reform to give terminally or incurably ill adults the choice of a medically assisted death. So why isn’t anything being done?
It seems like we can choose so many of our life experiences, but when it comes to choosing painful or peaceful death we have no say. Some people face death in the form of unbearable physical pain, mental anguish, or both. Even worse, sometimes there is no cure nor any type of complete pain reliever, which understandably causes hopelessness and absence of will to continue living.
This subject is ongoingly causing debate all around the world regardless of the historically strong opposition. With the church’s constant decline of power, change of cultural values and decades of being told that the individual is above the government, and are best suited for making that decision, it’s understandable that those same people would want to be responsible for the biggest decision regarding their lives.
More and more people by the day join in favor of Euthanasia and doctors are already acting upon the relief of suffering. But despite the increased favoritism of the public, by assisting someone to commit suicide in a state where this matter is illegal, the doctors rick prosecution.Current laws prohibit individuals the right to make the most personal of choices which is caused by opponents who fear abuse of the vulnerable and an inevitable dive towards involuntary euthanasia, while some like to take charge in how others should live and die.
In spite of the numerous reasons for being hesitant about this issue, it still comes down to the fact that our representatives find it easier to ignore hard issues and hope for the better, instead of doing their job and confronting them. Thanks to the strong level of the community supporting the subject, the medical profession and other countries are already ending the needless suffering and if the only thing in our way are the small minded leaders with conservative beliefs, then maybe we should ban divorce and abortion as well.
